Heat waves are not uncommon as summer temperatures continue to rise across Canada. While the average temperature in Medicine Hat is normally at a high of 27-29°C in August, the thermometer has been known to go up as high as 35 °C. While many Medicine Hat accommodations such as the Comfort Inn and Suites offer air-conditioned rooms and a pool in which stay cool, you may also want to do some exploring around town.

Follow our tips for staying cool while visiting some of Medicine Hat’s hotspots, and don’t forget your sunscreen, hat and fluids.

1. Spend a Day at the Lake

Only a short drive from our hotel, Echo Dale Regional Park is the perfect place to find respite from the heat. With shaded picnic spots, wooded trails, and a gorgeous freshwater lake in which to swim, you and your family will find loads to do while staying cool.

The park is open from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily and the swim lake has lifeguards on duty from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from June to Labour Day weekend.

2. Pack in Some Pool Time at Kinsmen Aquatic Park

While our hotel’s pool offers a quiet break from the heat, you and your kids will also love the Kinsmen Aquatic Park. Located in Medicine Hat’s Family Leisure Centre, this indoor facility features a number of water-based activities, including:

  • Wave leisure pool
  • Tots’ bubble pool
  • Dive tank
  • 50-metre lap pool
  • Rip-n-Rattler Waterslide
  • Lazy River

3. Take a Trek to the Mall

Just across from the street from our the Medicine Hat Comfort Inn and Suites Choice hotel, the Medicine Hat Mall is the largest shopping centre in southeast Alberta.

Shop for souvenirs, clothes and other knickknacks in the more than 50 boutique shops and department stores. Enjoy a cool drink or light meal at the food court or dine in one of the many restaurants. And make sure to check out what activities are taking place at centre court.

4. Quench Your Thirst at the Medicine Hat Brewing Company

If you find yourself visiting our lovely city sans kids, then why not cool off with a tall cool one from the Medicine Hat Brewing Company? Order a flight in the brewery’s tap room and taste offerings such as Hatfield Blonde Ale, Sin Bin Red Ale, Industrial Ave IPA, Burnside Blood Orange Ale, and Saamis Sessional, which are named in ode to city landmarks and notable residents. You can also enjoy some fine food pairings with your ale.

5. Make a Splash at Strathcona Island Park

A popular spot for local tourism, Strathcona Island is a city park adjoining the South Saskatchewan River. It offers five kilometres of trails along the river as well as a water and adventure playground for the kids. Bring some steaks and dogs to barbecue in the covered cooking huts and a canoe, kayak or other watercraft to cruise the river from the park’s boat ramp.
